The Bear – Gentle bear acts in a human-like manner by walking on 2 legs, climbing trees, and catching fish with its paws. Bears are good natured unless they are threatened – then look out - never come between a mother and her cub! Bears will eat anything but is especially fond of sweet things like honey or berries and they sleep in caves or dens. It takes a bear seven years to grow to maturity and be self-reliant. Bear is a hunter and ranges far and wide searching for food.

Bear People are self-reliant, constructive, slow to change, enjoy the comforts of the known and familiar, and can get things working properly. They are dreamers with vivid imaginations. To accomplish their dreams and goals, Bear People must look inside themselves for the answers and truth – to listen to their inner voices and intuition. They must find alternative pathways or new patterns, learn to change, as well as to be flexible and adaptable.

Hardworking, practical, eager, careful Bear People find it hard to relax as they enjoy constant activity. They have an eye for detail but often miss the big picture. Bear People need to break down problems into smaller parts in order to solve them but they also get anxious over the little things. Expressing themselves emotionally is a problem though they are warmhearted, generous, considerate, and dependable. Bears are embarrassed by their feelings and emotions. It takes them time to establish lasting relationships but once established they are devoted, moral, loyal, tender, considerate, gentle and loving.

People of this totem can be taken advantage of as they often take on too much in order to please others. Bear people don’t like confrontation and will pretend to be ill instead of standing up for themselves or saying “no.” They ignore their potential and abilities due to their insecurities. They make valuable friends as they are creative, good natured, reasonable, helpful, have good habits, and enjoy servicing others.

As children, these people are content, easy going, and particularly enjoy the security or familiarity of family life. Disorganization, confusion and disharmony can disorient the Bear child as to cause them anxiety and illness. As adults, they are usually very responsible and conscientious. They can be fastidious and have a problem with anyone not tidy or organized. Emotionally, Bear People hide their true feelings under an appearance of casualness and are misunderstood or thought to be cold or aloof.

Positive traits: Discriminating, meticulous, analytical, modest, painstaking.

Negative traits: Fussy, hypocritical, finicky, fastidiousness

Vocations: Arts and entertainment, accounting, banking, bookkeeping, journalism, law, medicine, publishing, mechanic, politics and government.

Aims, desires and challenges. The main challenge to Bear People is to find spirituality as well as the best way to deal with practical and physical matters. Finding their inner reality and voice, the true value in all things and to discard that which they no longer need is their life lesson. They must try to discover, create or establish new ways of service and find their self-worth. Remember, wisdom comes with time, acceptance and patience.

Season of the Bear – Summer. Summer is the time that things begin to bear fruit. It is a time of growth and steady progression. It is a time to enjoy youth, play, the outdoors, and gain wisdom. Summer touches all of nature’s energies – the body, mind and soul. It is a time of spiritual ecstasy. There are long days, short nights. It is a time of reaching maximum potential, rampant growth or progress and to celebrate individuality.

Direction of the Bear – South. This is the direction of the bright Sun, to experience and learn through direct contact, to see things in their true light. It is a time of trust with innocence not naivety, to be childlike but not childish, to learn to listen to your inner voice and instincts. Bears need to learn to ignore cynicism, illusions, fear, false values, guilt, to be impartial and objective, seek purity of vision, grow from experience and enjoy new adventures so life will be full of excitement and contentment. They need to rid themselves of baggage and old ties, to find their true self.

Animal Totem of the South – Mouse. Scrutiny is Mouse’s lesson but don’t over-analyze or forget to look at the big picture. Learn to feel, touch, conquer fears and timidity.  Pay more attention to the detail and small print in life for spiritual growth but don’t ignore the obvious. Be more alert, watch out for traps and situations that are harmful. Organize, be more methodical, categorize, gain knowledge, constantly explore and learn.

Polarity Totem Animal – Wolf. Wolf is the teacher and pathfinder or guide to spiritualism. Learn to be like wolf and use your mind with spirit, hunt for spiritual development and be more sensitive and intuitive to spiritual things as well as to the attitudes and intentions of others. Look within for your answers as well as without. Be alert and learn to listen.

Clan Totem – Turtle. Turtle is the symbol of Mother Earth. Ground yourself – develop ideas before presenting them. Honor the creative source within you. See the beauty and gentleness that exists in everyone and everything. Stability, persistence and tenaciousness are yours though progress is slow and careful. Guard against stubbornness and inflexibility. Be aware of new opportunities, awaken your primal senses.

Element of the Bear – Earth. Earth represents the physical. It is associated with productivity, fertility, growth and regeneration. A person born under the influence of Earth is someone who is instinctively driven by a need to plan and strategize and who will not change their decision on a course of action. Often misunderstood and underestimated by others but who is resourceful even when they are most afraid, and compelled to take action. They are the warriors and hunters, challengers to injustice. Earth signs require participation and need to interact with others, otherwise their planning and strategizing natures are unfulfilled.

It soothes, heals, stimulates, recharges, promotes truth, forgiveness, brings trust, joy, generosity, abundance, good health, love, good fortune, success, support, manifestation, openness, honesty, self-realization, self-control, visualization, development of inner wisdom and cleans the aura.
