The Deer – Deer is graceful, gentle, shy and are found in small herds or alone. They are sensitive to sound and movement, alert to danger and fast-moving. Deer blend into the environment, feed on grass, heather, shoots of plants and when necessary the bark of trees. They emit different sounds but most common is that which is similar to the bleat of a sheep. Deer bound from one place to another not always watching where they go. Deer people gain strength through caring, they touch others’ hearts and minds for healing. Deer people enjoy beauty in all they see both above and below the surface. Through empathy, Deer draws the best out of people and are always willing to share. Bounding from one idea or situation to another, Deer people often find themselves in difficult positions. They have a hard time judging time and difficulty in being organized. Deer people enjoy new studies and pursuits as they are always trying to acquire more knowledge. Connecting to the child within is one of the lessons Deer people need to remember. Congenial, adaptable, bubbly, expressive, sensitive Deer thrives on change and variety. They often swing between confidence and lack of self esteem or high spirits and depression. Often it appears as if they have two different personalities. Deer craves excitement, physical and mental stimulation otherwise they become moody and bored. They loathe routines, drudgery and monotony. Deer people make good conversationalists but sometimes forget to listen because they are so intent on talking. As children, Deer people are full of vitality, energy, have active imaginations and often confuse fantasy with reality. They lack patience and concentration and must work hard at their studies. As adults, they oscillate between high/low moods and are prone to nervousness. Due to their restless nature, Deer adults are prone to changing jobs on a regular basis. Punctuality is not a strong point for them. Like their totem animal, deer people enjoy the company of the members of their own sex and often have difficulty keeping long lasting, permanent relationships with the opposite sex. Naturally flirtatious and friendly, deer people often charm others by their quick-wit, engaging conversation and physical attraction. In intimate relationships, deer enjoy vocal and mental stimulation as well as the tactile. Positive traits: Adaptable, versatile, intellectual, witty, charming, logical, talkative, lively. Negative traits: Moody, changeable, restless, cunning, inconsistent, superficial, lazy. Vocations: Aviation, communications, dancing, electrical engineering, electronics, linguistics, media and public relations, office work, social work, politics, sports, writing. Aims, desires and challenges. The main challenge to Deer People is to establish long term, permanent relationships and to bring together the community. They must unite their talents and energies as well as unite logic with emotions. Deer needs to slow down, look around, consider the consequences of their actions and examine their choices more closely. Developing concentration, stability and attaining perseverance are also major challenges to be overcome. These gentle souls must guard against restlessness, broodiness and ingratitude. Season of the Deer – Spring. Spring is the time of awakening, new life, growth, rebirth, ideas and manifestation. The seed that is planted needs watering and nurturing from the Earth in order to grow, so do people, as they need the socialization, affection and assistance of others. People of this time have an affinity for Nature. Direction of the Deer – East. Your spiritual path is one of strength and intellectual growth. You need to learn to share with others and communicate more clearly. You can turn dreams into practical realities with persistence and determination. Look before you leap, consider the long-term consequences of your actions. Learn to see the details as well as the overall picture. Recognize your opportunities to soar above challenges, it may be a spiritual test. Animal Totem of the East – Eagle. Eagle represents “Spirit”. Eagle can see great distances and recognizes the connection and balance between Spirit and Earth. They see that a state of grace can be achieved through hard work, understanding and completion of tests to claim our personal power. The highs and lows of life are the trials to earn Eagle’s medicine. Learn to identify opportunities, attack your fear of the unknown. Feed your body but more importantly feed your soul. Polarity Totem Animal – Owl. Owl sees in the dark, can see past the surface. Owl warns you to beware of deception. Owl is a symbol of wisdom, telling you to train and widen your intellect, extend your awareness and organize everything for the most effective use. You need to be more observant, to see the motives and intentions of others. Owl is silent but powerful and has an intuitive knowledge that must continually be developed and enhanced. Clan Totem – Butterfly. Butterfly and deer are similar in that they flit from place to place with their restlessness and insatiable curiosity. Theirs is a journey of exploration and discovery. They like to help others with ideas and provide the fresh energy and revitalization necessary to many projects. Butterflies are full of positive energy and enjoy the journey of life and the “now”. Adapting and transforming to overcome problems and difficulties, butterfly views things with a wide perspective. It leaves behind the old concepts and attitudes, uses its courage to fly into new situations and accept change. Butterfly enjoys freedom and uses its mental powers for clarity of mind and spirit. Element of the Deer – Air with Fire. Air is speech or breath, scent and smell. A person born under the influence of Air is someone who is instinctively driven by a more passive and calming energy flow and will not be able to nor want to sustain authority over others as they are far too easygoing. They need space, a certain amount of freedom and although they love to be with others, they are more than capable of doing their own thing. Fire purifies as it burns and destroys the old so that the new may emerge. It is transmutation and regeneration. A person born under the influence of Fire is someone who is instinctively driven by passion and emotion, sometimes to the point where they cannot stop intense moments of uncontrollable passion. To expect them to behave differently would be like trying to stem the flow of an erupting volcano. They can harness their energy in positive ways by applying it to creative and challenging situations and inspiring others to action. They are often their own worst enemies as they are self-critical to the point of damage and needs approval, understanding and positive attention from those around them. Mineral Totem – Agate. Agate promotes brotherhood, good will, group stability, harmony of mind, body, emotions and spirit, absorbs and dissipates negativity. It eases self-doubt, instills feeling of generosity, creativity, new ideas and situations. Promotes lightheartedness, flexibility, and helps clear weather illnesses and pressures. In healing it helps in the regeneration of mucus membranes, glaucoma, immune system, anti-inflammatory, lowers temperatures & blood pressure. Also help to heal lungs and clear the respiratory system. Plant Totem – Mullein. (Aaron’s Rod) Spiritually helps you to rise above others, promotes versatility and helpfulness, gives courage and protection. It grows in harsh places such as wastelands as well as in fields. This plant is soothing, helps clear chest ailments and coughs, strengthens intestinal tract, kidneys and bladder as well as helps heal wounds and sores. If you carry a mullein it is said to attract love of the opposite sex. If placed under your pillow it is said to guard against nightmares. Affinity Color of the Deer – Orange. Path to self-realization is through surrender.Primary spiritual goal is spiritual presence, valor and perception. Positive traits: discrimination, initiative, spontaneity, happiness, joy, enthusiasm. Negative traits: confusion, disillusionment, lust, victim, withholding.
