The Otter – Otter is at home whether in water or on land and learn to swim quickly. They use their powerful tail as a rudder. Otter has short strong legs, webbed feet and can stay underwater for up to 4 minutes. They are known for their sense of fun, curiosity, acrobatics and playfulness. They are the mimics of the animal kingdom. Otter has a strong sense of family, is protective, passionate and devoted towards its companions.

Otter People are compassionate, friendly, playful, understanding, helpful, bold, loving, charitable, considerate and clean. They mimic others, work to benefit Earth and its inhabitants and are almost always walking the path of service to others. If they become too self-centered they will feel blocked, miserable and morose. Otter people enjoy organizing and running things as they are orderly and self-assured.

Likable, perceptive, intuitive, lovable, amusing, unpredictable Otter is sometimes demanding. They excel at study and have agile minds but sometimes have memory problems (especially when trying to recall lessons just learned). Otter children need encouragement in sports and physical activities.

Otter People are open, artistic, constructive, independent, outgoing, humane, dynamic, love people, their freedom and independence and are extremely devoted to their families and friends. They support equality and equal opportunity. Otter People have original ideas that are often impractical. They are too busy and take on too many commitments that they can’t fulfill. They often appear eccentric. Otter People are broadminded, unpredictable, idealistic, creative, expressive, imaginative, joyful, enjoy their home as well as being involved with people.

Being direct, open and decisive is the best way to communicate and get along with Otter People. They find satisfaction in what they have and enjoy life instead of merely tolerating it.

Positive traits: Friendly, willing, inventive, reforming, lively, perceptive.

Negative traits: Unpredictable, eccentric, tactless, rebellious, self-centered.

Vocations: Arts and entertainment, archaeology, astrology, astronomy, electronics, science and invention, medicine, psychology, psychiatry, philosophy, research, teaching, writing.

Aims, desires and challenges. Otter’s life lesson is self-knowledge, to experience life and gain wisdom, to turn that wisdom into action to benefit all. They need to learn to manifest their ideas and dreams. Another challenge for Otter is to balance spiritual and earthly matters. They need to have faith in all that is to come. They need to reform, invent and discover.

Season of the Otter – Winter. Winter is the season of rebirth and new beginnings and renewal. It is a time of love, healing, sharing, and creativity. It is a time to take charge, to fulfill obligations, take responsibility and take care of family. It is the season of goodwill, of belonging, the time to make changes. Winter is time for a purification of the self and to concentrate and focus your intentions to manifest all you want.

Direction of the Otter – North. North is the direction of purity and renewal. It encourages patience and inward growth – to focus on internal activities. It is a time of renewal of mind and body, purity of intent and purpose as well as the renewal of energy after the sleep that brings wisdom and knowledge. It is a time of new thought, ideas, plans and life.

Animal Totem of the North – Buffalo. Buffalo gives of itself completely as it offers its sacred life to provide for others and their abundance. Buffalo teaches sustenance with sharing, to share gifts of energy with others, and that true happiness comes with sharing what one is and has. Buffalo asks you to use your heart as well as your head and that through the diligence of effort and prayer we can manifest anything. You need to allow things to happen in their own time and way, use effort but not force, follow the natural rhythm.

Polarity Totem Animal – Salmon. Otter needs to balance its dreaming and imagination with Salmon’s practicality. Otter people need to develop Salmon’s thick skin, avoid being too sensitive as well as being manipulated or controlled by others. They need to be like Salmon and to learn to finish projects that they have started in order to gain wisdom through their experiences.

Clan Totem – Butterfly. Butterfly and otter are similar in that they flit from place to place with their restlessness and insatiable curiosity. Theirs is a journey of exploration and discovery. They like to help others with ideas and provide the fresh energy and revitalization necessary to many projects. Butterflies are full of positive energy and enjoy the journey of life and the “now”. Adapting and transforming to overcome problems and difficulties, butterfly views things with a wide perspective. It leaves behind the old concepts and attitudes, uses its courage to fly into new situations and accept change. Butterfly enjoys freedom and uses its mental powers for clarity of mind and spirit.

Element of the Otter – Air. Air is speech or breath, scent and smell. A person born under the influence of Air is someone who is instinctively driven by a more passive and calming energy flow and will not be able to nor want to sustain authority over others as they are far too easygoing. They need space, a certain amount of freedom and although they love to be with others, they are more than capable of doing their own thing.

Mineral Totem – Turquoise. Turquoise bring solace, promotes well-being, protection, empathy, self-realization, problem-solving, spiritual attunement, creativity, intuition, meditation, purification, releases inhibitions, prohibitions, calms panic attacks, as well as balances chakras and energy. In healing it detoxifies, relieves exhaustion, depression, cramps and pain, aids the immune system, regenerates tissue, allows for assimilation of nutrients, treats viral infections, eyes, cataracts, acidity, gout, rheumatism, stomach, and is an anti-inflammatory.

Plant Totem – Fern. Evergreen Fern grows in shade, in woodlands, and among rocks. Fern teaches us to bend with the wind to be adaptable and persistent. Its healing properties treat coughs and respiratory problems. Fern is the symbol for wonderment, child-like awe and to open your heart. It brings luck, discovery, and protection (some varieties of fern are poisonous).

Affinity Color of the Otter - Blue.
Path to self-realization is through charity.
Primary spiritual goal is devotion, compassion.
Positive traits: reciprocity, intelligence, acuity, humility, heart wisdom, purity.
Negative traits: vanity, arrogance, false modesty, envy/indulgence, aloofness/disdain

If you’ve enjoyed this nature’s wisdom profile about you and your life we recommend you read Kenneth Meadow’s “Earth Medicine” and Ted Andrew’s “Animal-Speak” and his other Nature series books to get an even more thorough review of yourself, your totem or spirit animals, and those totems of people around you.
