The Snake – Throughout history, the snake has been misunderstood and cast in a very poor light. They are thought of as evil or bringers of death. Contrary to this misguided opinion, Native people have revered and respected the snake for its many special powers. To them, this reptile is a symbol of resurrection or regeneration. It is able to shed its skin as it grows and live through this very traumatic life-death-rebirth cycle. It glides along, minding its own business and flowing smoothly across the earth. The snake is also a sign of healing, transition and growth – making room for something new as the old is cast away. The snake cannot see well but uses its tongue to feel vibrations and smell the world around them. Their perceptions allow them to foretell events and sense the motives of those around them.

Similarly, people who have the snake as their birth totem are adaptable and flexible in times of adversity and make the best of any situation. Snake medicine people are very rare. Their initiation involves experiencing and living through multiple snakebites, which allows them to transmute all poisons, be they mental, physical, spiritual, or emotional. They are always growing and opening themselves to new experiences and realms of thought, but they must be careful of their timing as they can bring upon themselves misfortune and trauma when inpatient. They can be secretive, hiding their feeling and heart behind a tough exterior. Snake people can transfix you with their eyes and their stare seems to penetrate your very soul. They are slow to anger and very tolerant but they can be very protective and dangerous when aroused. Snake people have good analytical powers with sound judgment and are impartial. They move slowly and carefully, but when in a tough situation, they can strike quickly.

When young, snake people are selfish and cannot control their sharp tongue. As they get older, they shed the ability to wound others and gain the ability to heal. Snake people carry powerful medicine for good – they are very helpful when it comes to drug or alcohol abuse. They are generous with their time and money. They enjoy luxury and are prone to self-indulgence and excess in food, drink, and sex. People of the snake have magnetic and charming personalities and have higher aspirations and drive. They go to extremes heights and depths with their emotions, which they try to keep hidden, protected and secreted away. They are a mixture of contradictions as they can be naive or critical, rational or impulsive, spiritual or materialistic, enthusiastic or lethargic, passionate or aloof. Their passionate natures give them an intensity to form sudden attachments, and conversely, detachments.

When it comes to romance and sex, snake people need constant affection. They need to be loved in order to show love. They can make love fiercely and with abandon. They are loyal, supportive, considerate, understanding, and put their mate or family first. They must guard against being too dominating and obstructing other individuals. Snake people expect others to be straightforward, precise, true to their word, honest and trustworthy.

Positive traits of Snake: Purposeful, determined, discerning, powerful, imaginative.

Negative traits: Jealousy, resentful, stubborn, obstinate, secretive, intractable.

Vocations: Arts & entertainment, detective, law and law enforcement, exploration, politics, military, science or medicine.

Aims, desires and challenges. People of this totem need to learn to satisfy their impetuous desires and calm their anxieties, to learn control. They are striving for a union with their immortal self. They have awareness of this plane and others and, through self-development and sacrifice, they will grow and evolve spiritually. Snake people must face up to the physical, emotional, and mental blocks that are holding them back. They must cultivate determination, resourcefulness, agility, flexibility, adaptability and creativity. They must avoid egotism, obstinacy, arrogance, suspicion, jealousy, envy and despondency.

Season of the Snake – Autumn. Autumn is the time for ideas and enthusiasm, of shedding the old for the new. The art of timing and the need to apply the warmth of emotion to cold intellect are the lessons to be learned. Remember that impatience leads to frustration. It is a time for the harvest and abundance.

Direction of the Snake - West. The western wind influences this totem and its attributes are adaptability, power and strength, introspection, selflessness and intensity,

Western Totem Animal – Grizzly Bear. The lessons of the bear are to use strength with gentleness, be self-reliant and listen to your inner voice and see the cycles of life. Bear is busy in the fall preparing for hibernation. He is concerned with reaching his goals. He can see into his own as well as others’ hearts to see the truth and beauty that lies there. He has the selflessness of idealism, the wisdom of introspection and strength of spirit. He tells you to search within yourself for all the answers to your hopes and aspirations and to use meditation to attain stability and peace.

Polarity Totem Animal – Beaver. The attributes of beaver need to be assimilated by Snake people to attain balance and harmony in their lives. Beaver teaches us patience, endurance and to feel a sense of achievement. Snakes can be too intense and serious sometimes and need the sense of fun that beaver provides. Beaver knows that teamwork and a sense of community works for the betterment of all.

Clan Totem – Frog. Frog brings the lessons of adaptability, flexibility and the need for new experiences. Frog people enjoy material and earthy things but also want to explore the intangible parts of life. They are creative and often are great healers. They have deep feelings but need the wisdom of experience to understand and cope with their intense emotions. Frog people are very empathetic and sympathetic.

Element of Snake – Water with Earth.  Earth brings stability, nourishment and energy. Water lends fluidity and flexibility but carves through the stone of the earth to attain its goals. Water is the infinite realm of possibilities. It is limitless and immortal. A person born under the influence of Water is someone who is instinctively driven by a need to evaluate and compromise, who is unable to do anything other than flow with the tide. They need space to flow, to channel their energy. They have an independent, free-flowing spirit even though others may well depend on them. Earth represents the physical. It is associated with productivity, fertility, growth and regeneration. A person born under the influence of Earth is someone who is instinctively driven by a need to plan and strategize and who will not change his or her decision on a course of action. Often misunderstood and underestimated by others but who is resourceful even when they are most afraid, and compelled to take action. They are the warriors and hunters, challengers to injustice. Earth signs require participation and need to interact with others, otherwise their planning and strategizing natures are unfulfilled.

Mineral Totem – Amethyst. Protects, tranquilizes, heals, cleanses, helps concentration, balances emotions, and aids intuition. Encourages selflessness and spiritual wisdom.
Healing properties: Hormones, endocrine system & metabolism. Strengthens cleansing & elimination organs & systems. Relieves pain & stress, eases headaches & tension. Reduces bruising, injuries, swelling, hearing disorders. Heals lungs, respiratory tract, skin conditions, digestive tract, removal of parasites, absorption of water, insomnia.

Plant Totem – Thistle. The thistle is the national flower of Scotland. It represents mysticism, and beauty with thorns. The thorns keep people from getting too close to their vulnerability at their center. Thistle needs to grow strong roots to gather energy and stability from the earth so it will not be blown away by the winds of change. Thistle encourages us to cultivate our talents and abilities and to maintain our sense of pride. It cures aches, pains and aids in digestion through cleansing. The lesson of thistle is to protect yourself against the criticism of others.

Affinity Color of Snake – Violet. Violet represents richness and a sense of grandeur. It is the color of spiritual values, magic energy, vitality, compassion and kindness.
Path to self-realization is through joy.
Primary spiritual goal is freedom and abundance.
Positive traits: detachment, centeredness, fairness, responsive, fortunate, inclusive.
Negative traits: worry, attachment, projection, fear, despondency, defeatism
